"We just want to grow GOOD food"

Perched on almost 30 acres is Up On Cedar Knoll Farm

It's such a lovely setting with hills, hardwoods and cedar trees where the Piedmont and Sandhills regions converge. With creeks running through the property, there is an abundance of wildlife.   At my first visit, I knew I could call it home!

So in late August 2011 it was acquired and so began home, property and barn renovations which took just over a year to complete in late 2012.

The Summer 2012 we started our first kitchen garden. We love fresh local vegetables and being able to just walk out the door and bring them in for dinner was rewarding. Plus, we know exactly how they are grown and handled.

Then came the thoughts of fresh eggs to go with those homegrown veggies. So, during the Fall of 2012 we built our  first Chicken Coop and run and our first heritage hens (Buff Orpingtons) were added March 7, 2013. By August we had fresh eggs daily!

At the time we started with the Orpingtons they were a threatened, heritage breed. That, coupled with the friendly personality and foraging ability of the breed, made them a perfect choice for our first hens. Just this past year the Livestock Conservancy announced the Orpington breed has recovered to acceptable numbers.

That same year we began adding to our compost bins to best utilize the hen litter, garden debris and kitchen scraps for growing our garden . Later that year we added fencing around the kitchen garden. Deer love gardens and veggies love good, nutrient rich compost!

We loved and enjoyed it all so much, we just kept going!

Summer 2014 was the addition of our small greenhouse for seed starting and garden storage.  It allows us to extend our growing season just a littler longer and is also used for growing fodder for the poultry.

Then we kept thinking...Laws were being passed allowing producers and retailers to NOT label where our meat was grown.  If you don't know where, you also don't know how it was raised, what it was fed nor how it was harvested.

We didn't like the thoughts of that. So, the summer 2015 we began fencing and pastures  to add turkey and chickens for our own table. Again, we chose old, established heritage breeds, the Dominques and Bourbon Reds. Since we had the space, we wanted to share some of these with others who also preferred to know where and how their food is grown.

Our first harvests of poultry were in 2016 and we were very pleased with the results. Our birds are always harvested humanely here on the farm and look amazing. Not only did we add excellent quality meat to our own table, we were able to provide poultry to local families.

Today it seems the projects for expansion never end.  In 2017 we  expanded our table egg  sales and also offer hatching eggs and chicks from our pastured chickens, turkeys and guineas.  Still lots of gutters and rain barrels to install, fences to build and perhaps a new barn for the addition of goats in the future. Who doesn't love fresh milk and cheese?

We are open for visits by appointment and welcome requests for our well loved products.
